Vacancy: Researcher at Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE)

The Finish Environment Institute (SYKE) is looking for a researcher/senior researcher to work on the topic of spatial modeling of biodiversity and ecosystem services and application of remote sensing data to the assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem status. Application deadline: 12.11.2018. 

About the workplace
The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) is a challenging and inspiring working environment for competent environmental professionals. We carry out multidisciplinary research to build a sustainable society and provide expert services and solutions to environmental problems. Approximately 50% of the funding is based on other sources than SYKE’s direct state budget.
In November 2018, SYKE’s Mechelininkatu office in Helsinki will change its premises to the Viikki campus.

Work tasks
The task is the spatial modeling of biodiversity and ecosystem services and application of remote sensing data to the assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem status. Researcher / Senior Researcher participates in ongoing projects and prepares new research projects. Information and methods to be developed in the research are applied to the monitoring of the state of nature, international reporting (EU, UN) and development of ecosystem accounts.
This assignment is placed in the Ecosystem Services Unit of the SYKE Biodiversity Center. The workplace can locate in one of the SYKE’s offices in Helsinki, Oulu, Jyväskylä or Joensuu.

Qualifications
Successful management of the task requires a higher university degree in a suitable field (e.g. geography, geoinformatics, ecology, environmental science), good familiarity with remote sensing materials, very good skills in analysing spatial data sets, and good interaction and cooperation skills. A doctorate degree is required from a Senior Researcher in the appropriate discipline.

The doctoral degree as well as the experience of acquiring research funding and project management are counted as an advantage.

Language skills required in the work
The work requires excellent oral and written Finnish Skills and good oral and written English skills. However, we encourage also non-Finnish speakers to apply!

Working time: State office hours
Commencement: 1.12.2018 or by appointment.
Time-limited to: 30.11.2020, project with limited duration
