Introduction & Objectives
ESP National Networks aim to improve decision making on ecosystem services byproviding a platform for researchers, government, non-government, business,industry and communities to exchange information and experiences on thetheoretical and practical application of ecosystem services at local tonational scales.
ESP-LU is a transdisciplinary and decentralized network of Luxembourgish stakeholders (mainly researchers, consultants and policy makers) operating in the field of ecosystem services according to different missions, but fostering the synergy of their complementary competences towards a common long-term strategy for the country, i.e. achieve a sustainable management of land and natural resources, which are both scarce and under depletion in Luxembourg.
On one hand, basic research activities are mainly centred on the development of ground-breaking knowledge, which can support the implementation of novel assessment methods, dynamic models and integrated tools for the spatially-explicit and time-dependent quantification and valuation of ecosystem services. On the other hand, the current directionality of the European Commission towards policies to enhance the supply of ecosystem services drives the design of methodologies and the collection, monitoring and harmonization of ecosystem services records into common international regulatory and policy oriented frameworks.
Therefore,the general aim of the ESP-LU network is to promote the collaboration among differentstakeholders for the definition and implementation of best practices anddecision support systems for ecosystem services assessment and management. Thiseffort will be key for positioning Luxembourg among the reference pilots inEurope in terms of scientific evidence and development of methods, tools andpolicies that strive on the knowledge of ecosystem services.
Activities and Outputs
The Luxembourg National Network is currently involved in several activities, including Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their services (MAES) in Luxembourg, the project “Naturpakt”, projects funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund, as well as projects related to iplementing EU legislation.
