Unrealised economic opportunities in remote Indigenous communities: Case studies from northern Australia

January 19, 2021 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

Building on unique Indigenous advantages for people living in remote areas, this study offers insights for innovative land-based economic opportunities across northern Australia. These advantages—outside the mainstream economics—include peoples’ abilities to manage land and knowledge of ecosystems, culture, traditions/ceremonies which directly contribute towards peoples’ health, social relations, provisioning of a safe and secure environment, and learning constituents of well-being.

BRICS Consortium: Toward Implementing Sustainable Development Goal 6

January 19, 2021 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

Nidhi Nagabhatla, co-lead of ESP’s Sectoral Working Group 5 (ES in Water management) published the paper BRICS Consortium: Toward Implementing Sustainable Development Goal 6. The article highlights how partnerships are the core of SDG 17.  Such association can be between both public and non-public entities working toward a shared common goal. This article assesses the emerging partnership between Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRCSI) and their agenda to SDG 6 (water related sustainable development goal).

Institutional and Policy Analysis: Water Security and Disaster Management in Small Island Developing States

December 21, 2020 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

Nidhi Nagabhatla, co-lead of SWG 5, together with her research group coordinated the study Institutional and Policy Analysis: Water Security and Disaster Management in Small Island Developing States.

The synthesis illustrates various drivers of coastal and marine ecosystems degradation while presenting critical aspects of policy and institutional analysis in the context of water security and disaster risk management (DRM) for the island nations. Local, national, and international regulatory frameworks analysed to examine gaps and needs in water management and preparedness for managing the impacts of disasters, in particular the SAMOA Pathway linked with integrated development planning and better implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, particularly SDG 6. A smart strategy (Ten-Point Agenda) is proposed to transform the theoretical frameworks of water security into practical action plans.

Brazilian headways to celebrate World Soil Day!

  • The technological platform of the National Soil Survey and Interpretation Program in Brazil (PronaSolos) is available to society! It brings together through a geographic information system (SigWeb), maps and soil data produced along the past 60 years by the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM), Embrapa and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), state and regional bodies and universities. You can access the platform here.
  • The BioAS technology involves the calculation of Soil Quality Indexes (IQS), calculated based on the chemical and biological properties together (IQSFertbio) and separately (IQSBio and IQSQuim) and can be a great ally to support the sustainable development of agriculture. Read more.
  • Brazilian researchers contributed to the FAO’s report “State of knowledge of soil biodiversity – Status, challenges and potentialities”. You can download the publication here.
  • A team from Embrapa Soil’s won the third place in the FAO’s scientific book contest for children on soil biodiversity with the theme “Keep the soil alive, protect soil biodiversity”. You can find more info and check the winners here.
  • Embrapa Soil’s lauched a new regular publication dealing with topics related to the future of Soil Science called “Radar Solos”. The first publication is available here.
