Introduction & Objectives
Costa Rica has been a world leader in nature conservation, pioneering initiatives such as the Payment for Ecosystem Services, which was a turning point for the recuperation of the forest cover of the country. Other visionary policy decisions for sustainable development include the creation of a system of protected area that today accounts for 26% of the country’s territory, implementing an electricity strategy based on clean energy which today supply more than 90% of the total electricity consumption, and setting the target to become the first carbon neutral country in the world by 2021.
Nevertheless, we believe that there is still much room to do design and implement frameworks to better value and manage natural capital, it is time to take again a big step to evolve to keep up with the current socio-economic and environmental challenges.
This is a space to share knowledge (in any way, from a peer reviewed paper to a video) on how the country is making this vision a reality with the help of local, national and international stakeholders.
