At RIVM, more than 2,200 colleagues work together every day on a healthy and sustainable living environment for man and ecosystems. Within the Center for Sustainability, Environment and Health (DMG), five enthusiastic colleagues from the Environmental Effects and Ecosystems department work on research in the field of biodiversity and natural resources. Think of the subsurface, which provides us with drinking water, the soil for our food and the wind that supplies us with energy. This “natural capital” is not infinite. The researchers in this team are therefore happy to provide insight into the contribution of natural capital to themes such as climate change, making agriculture more sustainable and a healthy living environment. Will you help this team to excel?
Purpose of the position
You are responsible for the implementation and content of various complex scientific studies. Thanks to you, the research projects run effectively and there is efficient collaboration. The 3 main objectives in this job are:
- Ensure that the team completes the ongoing research projects properly and on time.
- Ensure that the team contributes to social tasks through the projects.
- Ensure that new research projects in the field of biodiversity and natural capital reach this team and are well coordinated.
Activities
Your daily work is varied and will in any case consist of:
- Co-organizing good collaboration within the Natural Capital research group.
- Discuss progress with external parties (such as municipalities, provinces, ministries).
- Writing reports, based on the various research results, so that the message comes across clearly and concretely to the policymakers.
- Conduct network discussions with central government, provinces and municipalities in response to research results.
- Substantive coaching of team members.
- Contribute to the course of RIVM in the field of biodiversity and natural capital.
One of the most important tools that the team has developed in recent years is the Green Benefit Planner. This instrument is being used by more and more authorities to support decisions about spatial planning. An important task for you is to contribute to the further application and development of the Green Benefit Planner and the underlying data and models. The ultimate goal is to arrive at an integrated assessment framework, with which governments can compare policy variants on green, environment and health.
It is a requirement that you have a good command of the Dutch language. You must be able to talk to local policy officers at the national government, provinces and municipalities.

In this position you work on various social topics that matter. The research projects of the DMG center are current and the themes of our work are featured in the news almost every week. Think, for example, of PFAS, Tata Steel or wind energy and health. Within the RIVM you get the opportunity to let inspired substantive experts flourish. Bij het RIVM werken ruim 2200 collega’s elke dag samen aan de zorg van morgen. Binnen het centrum Duurzaamheid Milieu en Gezondheid (DMG) werken vijf bevlogen collega’s van de afdeling Milieu-effecten en Ecosystemen aan onderzoek op het gebied van biodiversiteit en natuurlijke hulpbronnen. Denk hierbij aan de ondergrond, die ons drinkwater geeft en de bodem is voor ons voedsel en de wind die ons energie levert. Dit “natuurlijk kapitaal” is niet oneindig. De onderzoekers uit dit team geven daarom graag inzicht over de bijdrage van het natuurlijk kapitaal aan thema’s, zoals klimaatverandering, verduurzaming van de landbouw en een gezonde leefomgeving. Help jij dit team om te excelleren?
Doel van de functie
Je bent verantwoordelijk voor de uitvoering en de inhoud van verschillende complexe wetenschappelijke onderzoeken. Dankzij jou verlopen de onderzoeksprojecten effectief en wordt er efficiënt samengewerkt. De 3 voornaamste doelstellingen in deze baan zijn:
- Zorgen dat het team de lopende onderzoeksprojecten goed en tijdig krijgt afgerond.
- Zorgen dat het team door de projecten een bijdrage levert aan de maatschappelijke opgaven.
- Zorgen dat er nieuwe onderzoeksprojecten op het gebied van biodiversiteit en natuurlijk kapitaal bij dit team terecht komen en goed worden gecoördineerd.
Werkzaamheden
Je dagelijks werk is afwisselend en zal in ieder geval bestaan uit:
- Mede organiseren van een goede samenwerking binnen de onderzoeksgroep Natuurlijk Kapitaal.
- Voortgang bespreken met externe partijen (zoals gemeenten, provincies, ministeries).
- Schrijven van rapportages, gebaseerd op de verschillende onderzoeksresultaten, zodat de boodschap helder en concreet bij de beleidsmakers overkomt.
- Netwerkgesprekken voeren bij het rijk, provincies en gemeenten naar aanleiding van onderzoeksresultaten.
- Inhoudelijk begeleiden van teamleden.
- Meewerken aan de koers van het RIVM op het gebied van biodiversiteit en natuurlijk kapitaal.
Een van de belangrijkste instrumenten die het team de afgelopen jaren heeft ontwikkeld is de Groene Baten Planner (bekijk ook deze video). Dit instrument wordt door steeds meer overheden gebruikt, om beslissingen over de ruimtelijke inrichting te ondersteunen. Een belangrijke taak voor jou is meewerken aan de verdere toepassing en ontwikkeling van de Groene Baten Planner en de onderliggende data en modellen. Het uiteindelijke doel is om te komen tot een integraal afwegingskader, waarmee overheden beleidsvarianten kunnen vergelijken op groen, milieu en gezondheid (beluister ook deze podcast over de groene buurt).
