YESS delegations to IPBES

10th IPBES Plenary

This session focused on the central theme of invasive alien species, and as always, various participants contributed to the preparation of this assessment. Among the experiences shared with different experts, there was a notable emphasis on the role of young researchers in addressing one of the primary causes of global biodiversity loss. Students from universities in China and Germany expressed their interest in joining the network, which is always welcome, considering the topics to be addressed in the future by IPBES and other related agencies

9th IPBES Plenary

This session focused on the assessment of the sustainable use of wild species, our group gathered various experiences from different stakeholders on this topic. Among the most notable were how local or indigenous knowledge is fundamental in the management of wild species. Likewise, groups of young researchers in environmental sciences such as the one from the University of Bayreuth expressed their interest in joining our network, which aims to continue growing and exchanging knowledge in the upcoming sessions.

8th IPBES Plenary

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the plenary is being held entirely virtually for the first time in history. 21 YESS members attended the regional Stakeholders Day meetings from June 3 to June 9, 2021, exploring the implications of the regional assessments adopted in IPBES 6, despite time zones and connection issues. The General Assembly approves the drafting of the thematic assessments of the relationships between biological diversity, water, food, and health; the causes of biodiversity loss; the factors influencing options for transformative change; and the Vision 2050 for Biological Diversity. Based on decisions made at its previous sessions, the General Assembly will begin the implementation of the work program in 2023. IPBES will initiate creative communication with the IPCC for cooperative efforts and complementing decision-making between the two platforms at the request of the parties.

7th IPBES plenary

YESS has an observer status at IPBES and we organized a delegation to the 7th IPBES Plenary. The main objective was to improve our knowledge of IPBES processes and outputs, meet different stakeholders and explore opportunities for early career researchers’ engagement in science policy interfaces. The YESS delegation consisted of 17 people. This funding covered the accommodation for five delegates during the Plenary. These were the five delegates who were also involved in meeting the objectives of the funding which were:

  • Poster presentation of the work on ecosystem services carried out in five GSLEP landscapes.
  • Prepare a report detailing activities conducted at the Plenary.
  • Research project with a paper publication.

In this report, the delegates describe their experience at IPBES7.

6th IPBES plenary

YESS organized a delegation to the 6th Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) in Medellin, Colombia in March 2018. The delegation was an observer group of young scientists in the plenary. The YESS delegation to the IPBES Plenary has written an informative report about their experience. What happened at IPBES6 plenary, and what does it mean to YESS and the youth? In this report, the delegates describe their experience at IPBES6 full of inspiration.

The activities as delegation included:

  • learning about IPBES and its work at online workshops before the plenary
  • discussing better ways of stakeholder involvement in IPBES work programme on Stakeholder Day
  • observing the plenary and sharing thoughts during daily delegation meet-ups
  • posting articles about the event on social media (Twitter, YESS newsletter, Facebook etc.)
  • and developing a paper based on reflections on the IPBES science-policy interface

IPBES reports 9 and 10 were written by Diego Cifuentes – YESS 2022 /2023 ET member
