Taking root: The launch of a new restoration tool

April 10, 2018 by ESP secretariat Categories: News

With the launch of the Restoration Opportunities Optimisation Tool (ROOT), the world has a better way of making decisions on ecosystem services, specifically in support of the people who actually rely on them. Following over three years of development through a partnership between International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and The Natural Capital Project, ROOT is a software tool that optimises trade-offs among different ecosystem services to help decision-makers visualise where investments in restoration could be made that would optimise benefits for multiple landscape goals. Launch of Regional Biodiversity and ES Assessments @IPBES6

March 29, 2018 by ESP secretariat Categories: News

The landmark reports launched by IPBES present major challenges to human well-being and highlight options to protect and restore nature and its vital contributions to people.

Biodiversity – the essential variety of life forms on Earth – continues to decline in every region of the world, significantly reducing nature’s capacity to contribute to people’s well-being. This alarming trend endangers economies, livelihoods, food security and the quality of life of people everywhere, according to four landmark science reports released recently, written by more than 550 leading experts, from over 100 countries.
