BWG 5 members joined the European Ecosystem Services 2016 conference

October 1, 2016 by ESP secretariat Categories: News

On the week between the 19th to the 23rd September, many members of the Mediterranean Ecosystem services working group met at European Ecosystem Services 2016 conference celebrated in Antwerpen, Belgium. In addition from presentations in other sessions and symposia, the working group had its own working session on Tuesday afternoon. During this session, we worked on identifying the unique ecosystem services linked to Mediterranean systems and discussed about the challenges of quantifying these services using various applied methods. We particularly looked at the unique Mediterranean characteristics of food production, of soil erosion regulation and of cultural services. In addition, we´ve got an overview of the different case studies, disciplines, systems and methods represented by partners.

Online survey: Essential Variables describing the functioning of social-ecological systems

September 16, 2016 by ESP secretariat Categories: News

E&SEFT Project: “Ecosystem & Socio-Ecosystem Functional Types: integrating biophysical and social functions to characterize and map the ecosystems of the Anthropocene”. Please, feel free to click on the link to know about project goals, scientists involved, and other partners.

The E&SEFT Project is led by the University of Granada (Spain) and aims to develop a new approach for characterizing and mapping social-ecological systems using functional characteristics and attributes.

Firstly, the project aims to identify the key processes that define the functioning of social-ecological systems, both from the ecological and social dimension. To do so, they are working on creating a list of the Essential Social-Ecological Functional Variables (ESEFVs). Online questionnaire on Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation

July 21, 2016 by ESP secretariat Categories: Collaboration calls

The Autonomous University of Barcelona (ICTA-UAB), is conducting a research on Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation.

The research is a part of a ESPA-funded project along with Cambridge University. The aim of the study is producing a survey-based quantitative analysis article exploring the confusion and disagreements that drive debates about ecosystem services and poverty. To do that the researchers are collecting data via an online questionnaire that explores ecosystem services and poverty issues.  [Read more…] about Online questionnaire on Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation

Paper: Are the major imperatives of food security missing in ecosystem services research?

June 30, 2016 by ESP secretariat Categories: Publications

This recently published paper by Cruz-Garcia et al. presents an overview of the scientific literature on ecosystem services and food security, with a major focus on case studies of farming communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The review paper was co-authored by scientists affiliated with CIAT and could be of interest to ES researchers working on the interface with food security.
