The biggest peaceful protest against corporations in human history – Daring farmers of India

January 19, 2021 by Iskra Categories: News

A new paper by Sectoral Working Group 9 (Indigineous Peoples and Local Communities) lead Kamaljit Sangha sheds light on the ongoing farmers’ protests in India and provides critical analysis of the current situation.

Abstract
The current crisis in Indian agriculture warrants solutions, but in consultation with farmers and related institutions; unlike the imposition of Farming Reforming Bills passed by the Indian Government on 20-22 September 2020. The three recent Government Farming Reform Acts i.e. Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act; and Essential Commodities Act, have caused frustration among millions of farmers, farmworkers, and the general public since September 2020, and the government fails to understand farmers’ perspective—agriculture is their heritage, not a business. BRICS Consortium: Toward Implementing Sustainable Development Goal 6

January 19, 2021 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

Nidhi Nagabhatla, co-lead of ESP’s Sectoral Working Group 5 (ES in Water management) published the paper BRICS Consortium: Toward Implementing Sustainable Development Goal 6. The article highlights how partnerships are the core of SDG 17.  Such association can be between both public and non-public entities working toward a shared common goal. This article assesses the emerging partnership between Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRCSI) and their agenda to SDG 6 (water related sustainable development goal).

Mapping Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services in Agricultural Landscapes in Colombia and Peru

December 21, 2020 by Iskra Categories: News

JNCC and Environment Systems have recently published the first of two case studies that form part of the EO4cultivar project, a UK Space agency funded project under their international partnership programme.

The case studies demonstrate how combining earth observation data with local knowledge can be used to assess the ecosystem services that contribute to resilient production systems. They also demonstrate how this information can be brought into decision making at relevant scales within multi-functional landscapes. Institutional and Policy Analysis: Water Security and Disaster Management in Small Island Developing States

December 21, 2020 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

Nidhi Nagabhatla, co-lead of SWG 5, together with her research group coordinated the study Institutional and Policy Analysis: Water Security and Disaster Management in Small Island Developing States.

The synthesis illustrates various drivers of coastal and marine ecosystems degradation while presenting critical aspects of policy and institutional analysis in the context of water security and disaster risk management (DRM) for the island nations. Local, national, and international regulatory frameworks analysed to examine gaps and needs in water management and preparedness for managing the impacts of disasters, in particular the SAMOA Pathway linked with integrated development planning and better implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, particularly SDG 6. A smart strategy (Ten-Point Agenda) is proposed to transform the theoretical frameworks of water security into practical action plans.
