Updates from ESP Greek national network (HESP)

June 21, 2018 by ESP secretariat Categories: ESP Updates, News, Publications

Our colleagues from the Hellenic ESP national network in Greece organised two workshops on ES implementation as an environmental management tool since the beginning of 2018. Next to this, members of HESP have authored a number of relevant publications. Keep reading for more information on the workshops and publications.

During the final conference of the ESMERALDA project last week in Brussels, Panayotis Dimopoulos as Greek MAES coordinator presented the progress in Greece regarding MAES which was well received. There is interest in the way Greece has progressed regarding ES and MAES, rising from a modest position on the ESMERALDA ES barometer into the top three of countries where there is progress. Regarding MAES in Greece, that is a component of a LIFE Integrated Project.

Global change effects on land management in the Mediterranean region

May 22, 2018 by AleMoranOrdonez Categories: News, Publications

Members of the ESP Mediterranean biome working group contributed to a new publication on global change effects on land management in the Mediterranean region.

In this study, Žiga Malek and colleagues developed a future land use change scenario which demonstrates that sustainable development in the Mediterranean basin would allow for food security as well as the conservation and Mediterranean wetlands. You can access the full publication here.

New publication on the impacts of urbanization in ES supply by members of the ESP Mediterranean WG

May 22, 2018 by AleMoranOrdonez Categories: Member post, News, Publications

Recently, Ana Paula García-Nieto and other colleagues of the ESP Mediterranean Biome Working group published an analysis of the “Impacts of urbanization around Mediterranean cities: Changes in ecosystem service supply”. For eight European and four North African cities, we have quantified changes in peri-urban land cover, for periods of sixteen years (1990–2006) in the Northern African, and twenty-two years (1990–2012) in the European cities. Based on land cover changes and using an expert based method, we derived quantitative estimates of the dynamics in the supply of twenty-seven ecosystem services.
