Two webinars on ecosystem services in the context of the US

June 29, 2021 by Iskra Categories: News, Upcoming events

Two webinars were held by the National Ecosystem Services Partnership (NESP – United States) in May and June, on ES valuation and on forest-based ES. Read more below and follow the links to watch the recordings.

Different methods, different values: How the choice of ecosystem service valuation method can affect cost-benefit analysis and prioritization decisions. Hear a presentation that synthesizes the results of over a decade of ecosystem services valuation work in the U.S. state of Minnesota and compares and contrasts results from “traditional” non-market approaches (stated preference surveys, hedonic analyses, avoided cost approaches, and travel cost models) with “alternative” valuation methods based on ecosystem service metrics, surveys, semi-structured interviews, and Q sort assessments. Read more.

Payment for forest-based ecosystem services from private lands in the United States. Hear a presentation on an effort to account, estimate, and document the full extent of direct payments for ecosystem services to private forest landowners in the United States. Read more.

BIOM ecological society Kyrgyzstan launches initiative for ecosystem protection

June 29, 2021 by Iskra Categories: News

As part of a new initiative on ecosystem protection, БИОМ ecological society Kyrgyzstan launched an initiative appealing to the international community to recognize the role and value of natural ecosystems for dealing with global climate change.

In support of the same initiative, an online event was held earlier this month. The aim of the conference was to launch a multi-stakeholder dialogue to recognize the value of natural ecosystems and their key role in shaping the climate and conditions of Life on the planet as a basic priority of development programs. You can watch the full conference here and find the proceedings in English here.

The ESP Brazilian Network would like to bring your attention to the following recent relevant publications:

  • The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) launched the updated versions of the natural capital accounting regarding water bodies and non-timber forest products. Both publications are available for a free download here and here.
  • Strategies to reach global sustainability should take better account of ecosystem services – full publication is available here.
  • An entire book dedicated to present the history, biodiversity, threats and opportunities of the mega-diverse Atlantic Forest, including a chapter about ecosystem services.

YESS delegation at IPBES8 Plenary

June 29, 2021 by Iskra Categories: News

Young ES Specialists (YESS) has been present at Stakeholder Days and 8th Session of the IPBES Plenary (IPBES-8) through a delegation of 15 early-career researchers (ECR) from 12 countries from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The head of this delegation is Dr. Giovanni Ávila-Flores.

During the Stakeholders Days (June 4, 7 and 8), the YESS members Andrew Kadykalo, Hyeonju Ryu and Carla Washbourne presented some research results about barriers and opportunities for ECR, which generated positive comments. On June 09, the representative of YESS in Open-Ended Network of IPBES Stakeholders (ONet), Paola Fontanella Pisa, made a call for new actors to join ONET and IPBES activities in general, focusing on youth participation and ECR. Survey on policy instruments for sustainable peri-urban landscapes

June 29, 2021 by Chiara Cortinovis Categories: Collaboration calls, News

Are you familiar with a policy instrument (e.g., plan, regulation, incentive mechanism, PES scheme) designed for or implemented to increase the sustainability of peri-urban landscapes? Please contribute to our research by filling in the survey at the following link. The survey is anonymous and it takes only 15 minutes to complete. Thanks for your help!
