Are you interested in advancing the planning and implementation of sponge landscapes in Europe?

Leibniz University Hannover is calling for applications for a PostDoc and a PhD position in Planning Resilient Landscapes to conduct research on nature-based solutions to address floods, droughts, and biodiversity change within the EU Horizon Europe project SpongeWorks. SpongeWorks will advance the upscaling of ‘sponge measures’ as nature-based solutions to boost the natural water retention capacity in Europe.

The positions are supervised by Christian Albert within the Landscape Planning and Ecosystem Services working group at Leibniz University Hannover, Institute of Environmental Planning.

Please see the following websites for the official announcements:
• PostDoc (m/f/d) in Planning Climate Resilient Landscapes (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100 %) Due date: March 27, 2024. Key focus: Synthesis research and scientific coordination
• PhD Candidate (m/f/d) in Planning Climate Resilient Landscapes (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 75 %) Due date: April 1, 2024. Key focus: Geodesign for co-creating sponge strategies.

Make Nature Count 2.0 Report and webinar

January 22, 2024 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

Last week on January 10, FSD, in collaboration with the ASN Bank presented their Make Nature Count 2.0 report, marking a significant milestone in their mission to integrate ecosystem service valuation into financial decision-making. The webinar was a success, with presentations, but also an interview and more than enough discussion and questions coming from the 120 people who subscribed.

New paper on national mapping and assessment of ES projects in Europe

January 22, 2024 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

A paper coming forth from a session at the 3rd ESP Europe conference in Tartu titled: ‘National mapping and assessment of ecosystem services projects in Europe – Participants’ experiences, state of the art and lessons learned’ was recently published in Ecosystem Services.

The national mapping and assessment of ecosystem services (ES) has been set out since 2011 with the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020. By now, most EU Member States implemented mapping and assessment projects to some degree. We surveyed 13 EU Member States’ more recent implementations to give a systematic overview of the components assessed, the data & methods used, and the greatest challenges as perceived by participants. News from Slovenia national network

November 30, 2023 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

On 8 November, we organised the final event of the NatGuidES project in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where we presented the manual for the identification, assessment and mapping of ecosystem services (ES).

The manual for the identification, assessment and mapping of ES, which was created within the framework of the NatGuidES project, defines practical steps for the implementation of the concept of ES in protected areas (PA), with the aim of supporting managers in the management of PA by means of a protocol for the identification, assessment and mapping of ES. Addis Ababa – Urban and planning policies on a historical perspective

October 27, 2023 by Iskra Categories: News, Publications

Book by Prof. Corrado Diamantini and Prof. Domenico Patassini with a Preface by ESP members Dr Blal Adem Esmail (Ruhr University Bochum), Dr Chiara Cortinovis (University of Trento), and Dr Linda Zardo (Università Iuav di Venezia)

We are glad to announce the release of a new book titled “Addis Ababa. At the Roots of a Disputed Flower“, published by ListLab as part of the Babel International category. The book includes a valuable contribution from our ESP members Dr. Blal Adem Esmail, Dr. Chiara Cortinovis, and Dr Linda Zardo. This book represents the English edition of the work by Prof. Diamantini and Prof. Patassini, marking three decades since its original Italian version was published by Franco Angeli. The significant task of bringing the book up to the present day is accomplished through the addition of the first chapter, marking a substantial departure from the original Italian edition. This new chapter provides readers with fresh insights into the modes and significance of the transformation that has unfolded in Addis Ababa in a mere 15 years.
