Open Dialogue Title: Valuing What Matters: pluralism, power, and business decision-making

June 24, 2025 by Iskra Categories: News, Upcoming events

Wednesday, 2 July, 13:00-14:00

For decades, economic value has focused narrowly on financial returns, overlooking the vital contributions of nature and people. This dialogue—based on research by the Value Commission and Social Value International—explores how to integrate diverse perspectives into valuation and decision-making. Through a dynamic panel and open discussion, we’ll examine insights from Valuing What Matters, share best practices from impact valuation experts, and explore how pluralism and power dynamics shape business success. Join us to help shape more inclusive, sustainable decisions. [Read more…] about Open Dialogue Title: Valuing What Matters: pluralism, power, and business decision-making

Rudolf de Groot ESP Summer School 2025: Application deadline 25 May

May 15, 2025 by Iskra Categories: News, Upcoming events

Topic: Value Transfer for Ecosystem Service Valuation and Mapping
📅 1–5 September 2025 📍 University of Aveiro, Portugal

The first edition of the Rudolf de Groot ESP Summer School 2025, will provide early-career researchers with theoretical and practical training on value transfer methods for ecosystem service valuation and mapping. With the growing need to integrate nature into economic decision-making, understanding and experience on how to quantify, transfer, and map ecosystem service values is essential for both research and policy applications. Participants will learn to master, use and implement different value transfer methods and strengthen related skills during the Summer School. The work will consist of a combination of seminars, value transfer applications, ecosystem service value mapping, presentations, discussions with peers and several excursions.

From global to local ecosystem services: pathways to Nature-based Solutions inspired from Down Under

23-27 June 2025 | Darwin, Australia

As we confront the critical challenges of climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, land degradation and sustainability, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer a powerful approach to address these interconnected crises. The 11th ESP World Conference in Darwin will explore pathways to NbS, with a special focus on the insights that local and Indigenous peoples and their value systems can offer.

Registration is currently open, Early Bird fees are available until 1 May. You can find out more and register at www.espconference.org.

Key topics include:

  • Local and Indigenous values and ecosystem services: Understanding the role of Indigenous and local community knowledge and value systems in shaping sustainable pathways.
  • Pathways to Nature-based Solutions (NbS): Exploring successful models from local to global scales, and how they can be applied elsewhere and/or adapted.
  • From research to practice: Connecting ecosystem services science with policymakers, practitioners, and diverse sectors to accelerate NbS implementation.
  • Nature-positive Solutions for a global future: How local insights can contribute to global environmental goals, such as the SDGs and biodiversity targets.

Meet the IPBES Nature Futures Framework for scenarios and planning | ESP World Conference webinar

March 19, 2025 by YESS admin Categories: News, Upcoming events

Organised jointly by the Young ES Specialists (YESS), the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP), and the IPBES Task Force on Scenarios and Models.

Webinar: Future scenario analysis and planning of biodiversity and ecosystem services by using the Nature Futures Framework from local to national scales

Poster for the event described on this pageDate: 21 March 2025, 10:00 CET / 18:00 JST

The Nature Futures Framework (NFF) is a flexible tool designed to support the development of scenarios and models of desirable futures for people, nature and Mother Earth. Following the 2016 Scenarios and models assessment, the IPBES scenarios and models expert group developed this framework. The NFF has since been applied to diverse research questions in equally diverse locations. This webinar is a preview of the session T6 a ESP 11 World Conference and part of the project “Development of an Integrated Assessment Model linking Biodiversity and Socio-Economic Drivers, and its Social Application” (IAM-B).
