A Special Issue of Ecosystem Services (Elsevier) by 2020 ESP Asia Conference

July 18, 2019 by Iskra Categories: Collaboration calls, ESP Asia Regional Office, News, Publications, Upcoming events

ESP Asia Office starts preparing the special issue of Ecosystem Services to compile research outcomes of ES professionals in Asia.

This idea was brought up last year during 2018 ESP Asia Conference in India and our Asian partners stressed the importance of compiling research outcomes and ES policy practices in Asian countries. This initiative will also contribute to engaging interdisciplinary researchers into adopting ecosystem services approach and supporting collaboration of ES researchers in  Asia.

The tentative title of this special issue is “Ecosystem services approach : policy and practice in Asia”. [Read more…] about A Special Issue of Ecosystem Services (Elsevier) by 2020 ESP Asia Conference

The Hard Corals of Jordan – A Field Guide, 2019

July 16, 2019 by Iskra Categories: Blog posts, News, Publications

The Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan issued the first field guide on the hard corals of the Gulf of Aqaba

The Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) was founded in 1993 by a group of concerned Jordanian ecological divers, led by Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Ali, one of the first female divers in Jordan. In 1995, the initiative became the first specialized Jordanian non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to the conservation of the marine environment in Jordan. Jordan’s 27 km coastline at the Gulf of Aqaba is the country’s only sea-outlet, a very attractive tourist destination at the Red Sea, and home to one of the best snorkeling and diving coastlines in the world. Yet, the fragile underwater ecosystems are permanently threatened by economic activities, environmental pollution, and climate change.

Recently, JREDS has released the first field guide on Jordan’s hard corals, which provides a comprehensive review and details on numerous hard coral species at the Gulf of Aqaba. [Read more…] about The Hard Corals of Jordan – A Field Guide, 2019

Paper “Estimating and valuing the carbon release in scenarios of land-use and climate changes in a Brazilian coastal area”

July 16, 2019 by Bruna Pavani Categories: News, Publications

Members of the network published the paper “Estimating and valuing the carbon release in scenarios of land-use and climate changes in a Brazilian coastal area” in the Journal of Environmental Management. The research shows that the carbon losses can be greater in scenarios of new ventures , such as infrastructure logistics, oil-gas exploration and pressure in natural environments. With the global warming, the monetary losses could amount to US$ 90 million in 20 years. Besides carbon release, results also highlight the large amount of carbon still stored in protected areas that are threatened by regional economics and special attention from the public sector, management bodies and regulators. Find the paper here.
