Help us update the Ecosystem Services Valuation Database (ESVD)

April 22, 2020 by Iskra Categories: Collaboration calls, News

To make better informed decisions about trade-offs involved in land use change, or any activity affecting ecosystems and biodiversity, we need better information about the full importance of ecosystems to our wellbeing. In addition to intrinsic/ethical and other non-monetary values, economic considerations still dominate cost-benefit analysis.

To provide information on the economic benefits of ecosystems and biodiversity, and on the costs of their loss, a database was developed for the TEEB study, published in 2010.

We are now updating this database which now contains over 600 studies and more than 4000 value records distributed across all biomes, services and geographic regions (3x as much as the original TEEB database). We are currently setting up a review-process to double-check the current data, and welcome new studies for our repository.

Are you interested in developing the ESVD? Find more information on how you can contribute in the full invitation letter:

Survey on marine turtles

April 14, 2020 by Iskra Categories: Collaboration calls, News

Currently 6 out of 7 marine turtle species globally are classified as threatened, endangered or critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This is due to various threats including the loss of turtle habitat and nesting sites; marine waste and pollution; ingestion of plastic waste; over-harvesting of turtle eggs, meat and shells; entanglement in fishing gear; and warming sands and sea level rise.

If no additional effort is made to protect marine turtles, it is possible that some species could become extinct in the next few decades. We are asking people across the globe to complete the following 5-10 minute survey to express the importance they place on marine turtle conservation.

Fill out the survey. [Read more…] about Survey on marine turtles

Call for Case Studies: WeValueNature

March 19, 2020 by Iskra Categories: Collaboration calls, News

We Value Nature is currently carrying out together with Ecoacsa a pilot project to strengthen collaboration between the public and private sector through assessing the options, benefits and best practices of restoring degraded land in a specific ecosystem in the Mediterranean area, Cabo de Gata-Níjar (Andalusia, Spain), by reinforcing the integration of natural capital in decision-making processes.

The project is currently calling for case studies  for ecotourism, eco-agriculture, agroforestry and ecosystem restoration projects that have implemented natural capital and ecosystem services approaches. A selection of projects will be profiled as best practices of the different natural capital approaches that can benefit local stakeholders from public and private sectors and society. Call for Papers: Special Issue on Ecosystem Services in Asia in the journal Ecosystem Services

March 18, 2020 by Iskra Categories: Collaboration calls, ESP Asia Regional Office, News, Publications

Title: Ecosystem Services Science, Policy and Practice in Asia: examples of applications in planning, management and decision making

Responding to calls from Asian researchers and practitioners during various ESP-conferences on ecosystem services (a.o. the ESP-Asia Forum during the 10th ESP World Conference, Oct. 2019), this special issue aims to provide examples of relevant contributions to ecosystem-based policy-making, to find innovative solutions from case studies, and to stimulate future research activities on actualization of ES approaches in Asia. Help wanted: Fill out survey on ECR engagement in science-policy interfaces

March 3, 2020 by Iskra Categories: Collaboration calls, News

We, the Young Ecosystem Services Specialists (YESS) Network’s delegation to the 7th IPBES Plenary in Paris in 2019 are conducting study about engagement of early-career researchers (ECRs) in science-policy interfaces. We are interested in perspectives and experiences of both ECRs as well as researchers at later career stages. We would really appreciate if you participated in the study by filling out online survey by April 1st.

  • If you are an ECR (5 or fewer number of years of work experience after you last degree), then this survey is for you.
  • If you are a researcher with more than 5 years of work experience, this survey is for you. [Read more…] about Help wanted: Fill out survey on ECR engagement in science-policy interfaces
